What the nurses will do immediately following the birth, hopefully, is maintain the baby, skin to skin, with the mother. Studies show that babies that are left skin to skin to their mothers adjust much faster to life outside of the womb. They will also make sure that the baby is breathing well and stays warm. They will place a hat on the baby because they lose temperature from the head. They will place a blanket over the baby when maintaining skin to skin with the mother. They will continue to assess the baby and the mother while the doctor is taking care of the placenta and making sure that mother doesn't need any repair in the perineum. Meanwhile, they are also going to be looking for the first few signs of feeding. Newborn's new job is how to breath, how to keep themselves, and how to feed. It happens, more or less, in that order. The nurses will give the baby to the mother when he is ready to feed.
